Last weekend MJM’s Holly May drove five and a half hours to Wales to attempt walking Mount Snowdon at sunset!
She says attempt, because it was going to be a tough task for someone with limited fitness levels and zero experience of climbing mountains!!
Here is Holly’s account
Armed with my backpack, lots of sweet snacks, water, head-torch and a walking pole we started our sunset walk at 4.45pm. I think I was the most equipped person on the mountain that day, in spite of everyone telling me I was being a bit extra and that I’d be fine in my trainers. Profits in Decathlon definitely went up in the month before my trip! I do not regret a single thing I took with me. I was warm, well-fed, and well-equipped. I was not, however, prepared for how difficult it would be. And all I kept thinking was “thank goodness I didn’t sign up for the three peaks challenge” (Google it, and leave it there!!).
At times, my legs wanted to give way. It honestly felt like I could not take another step. I even contemplated turning back, but I pushed on and reached the summit (on my hands and knees) at 8.17pm, having climbed 1,085 metres to get there!
The walk back in the dark was easier in some ways, but harder in others. The view of the night sky was just beautiful though – the stars were so clear and it definitely made up for not seeing the sunset due to the clouds and fog. We finally returned to the foot of the mountain at almost 12am, so no celebratory drinks in the pub for us, but pride in the fact that WE DID IT!!
I said I’d never climb a mountain again, but who knows. It has certainly made me feel like I can pretty much do anything now. I’ll definitely put my top-of-the-range walking boots to good use somehow!
I might try abseiling next!
Congratulations Holly. Keep ‘Climbing High‘
